What is Keratin Treatment? And where to find it in Melbourne?

Keratin treatment is the secret to smooth and shiny hair. But what does keratin do? How long does it last? And how much does it cost? This article is going to explain them all.

Keratin is a protein in hair that loses over time. As the name suggests, a keratin treatment replenishes the precious protein in hair to smooth and shine frizzy hair. The smoothness has led to the alternative name of "keratin straightening treatment." The treatment result can last for months. Newer versions of keratin treatment, including those used in A2 Salon, are free of the potentially harmful formaldehyde.

The time taken for a keratin treatment should be about one to three hours but not likely to take more than four hours. The treatment begins with a wash and other hair treatment to remove dirt and grease on the hair. Then, our hairstylist will apply the keratin treatment to your wet hair and blow-dry the hair. At A2 Salon, we will use the GlamPalm Magic Series hair iron to seal in the treatment. The Healing Stone technology by GlamPalm contains anions to further enhance the results of the keratin treatment.

Unlike permanent straightening, keratin treatments are temporary and wash out after a few months. Chemical relaxers such as sodium hydroxide, lithium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide or guanidine hydroxide break and restructure the hair bonds, so your hair becomes weaker and straight. Because keratin treatments fill the porous parts of hair with protein, the results will feel smoother than permanent straightening.

While keratin treatments can be done at home, the results will be different from those in salons. Because keratin is a naturally existing protein in hair, products can be named "keratin" but have no actual keratin in the ingredient list. Instead, the treatments use intense silicone and conditioning to make hair smooth. If the product does not provide detailed instruction on how to wash, dry and straighten your hair, it is a high possibility that it is a standard conditioning treatment. And at-home versions of keratin treatments tend to wash out in a few weeks rather than months for salon treatments.

Another benefit of keratin treatment is that it can be used with hair colouring. The additional keratin treatment will bring more shine to your hair colour, instead of decolouring. We recommend using sulphate-free shampoo and conditioner to maintain the results. And do not use salt-based sprays. We also do not recommend women who are pregnant to use keratin treatment.
